In publishing the Delhi-born author in Passport to Crime we are breaking a convention that this department is reserved for stories in translation. But despite its having been written in English, the following tale is so thoroughly steeped in the culture of India that it seemed to us to find a natural home in our Passport series. Ms. Jha studied at Amherst College and the University of Chicago, and worked in Paris. She now lives in Tokyo with her husband and two children.
